Driver QualificationsBack to Top 

To be an Independent Contractor with Sewell Motor Express, you must:

  • Have a current Class A CDL (HAZ MAT endorsement is a plus).
  • Be at least 23 years of age.
  • Have a working telephone number.
  • Pass a DOT physical, and drug screen.
  • Have 2 years verifiable Over-the Road Tractor/Trailer experience within the past 3 years.
  • Must be capable of performing all phases of Sewell Motor Express policies.
  • Have no more than 3 moving violations in the past three years.
  • No record of involvement in 2 "at fault" traffic accidents while operating a motor vehicle         during the past 36 months.
  • Have no prior record of DUI in commercial motor vehicle or personal vehicle in the past five years.


    Sewell Motor Express Owner Operators cannot have any of the following convictions or citations within the past 60 months:

  • Felonies
  • Reckless Operations
  • Serious Traffic Offense (including DUI)
  • Suspension (from conviction while operating a vehicle)

    All approved applications attend a ½ day one on one orientation, you will:

  • Pass a DOT drug screen
  • Take a road test
  • Pass a DOT physical
  • Receive training on Sewell policies and procedures

    Our fleet currently includes conventional Freightliners, Peterbilts and Internationals with standard 10 speed transmissions. Our entire fleet provides air ride suspension, air ride cabs, AM/FM cassette stereo, air conditioning and power steering. Our trailers are 53-foot dry vans and 48-foot flat beds. All of our equipment is maintained by our in-house shop.

    At various times of the year, Sewell Motor Express offers different incentive plans. These may include but are not limited to: referral pay and recruiting bonuses. Please check with the Sewell Safety Department for current promotions and details.

  • Vans pay up to 70% of Gross Revenue
  • Flatbeds pay up to 72% of Gross Revenue

    Other Benefits include:

  • 100% Fuel Surcharge Reimbursement
  • 100% of all tarp fees
  • 98% no touch freight
  • Discount Fuel Network
  • Discounted Maintenance Program
  • All fuel and highway tax reporting is done and paid for by Sewell Motor Express
  • After 1 year of lease all permits are paid by Sewell Motor Express

    All Independent Contractors must provide a copy of Bobtail Liability. We request that Sewell Motor Express is listed as certificate holder.

    All Independent Contractors must provide a copy of your Workman's Compensation. We request that Sewell Motor Express is listed as a certificate holder.

    Pre-Lease Requirements for new Owner Operators  Back to Top

    All trucks must meet the following requirements before the truck can be leased on at Sewell Motor Express. There is no charge for pre-lease inspection.

  • Owner Operator tractors cannot be over 10 years old.
  • Fifth wheel no higher than 48 inches.
  • Tractor cannot weigh more than 20,000 lbs. with half tanks of fuel (must have proof with-      current weigh ticket).
  • Must have air dryer.
  • Steer tires with no less than 4/32 tread.
  • Drive tires with no less than 2/32 tread.
  • Possess the necessary safety equipment including; fire extinguisher and triangle     reflectors.
  • Meet all standards of Sewell Motor Express inspections sheets.

    Additionally, before a lease can be signed Independent Contractors must:
  • Provide a copy of Title or Application for Title with the Independent Contractor named as     owner.
